Down to Key West

It was just shy of 7:00 am this morning when we pulled onto Longboat Club Road and headed directly east through the Florida Everglades towards Key West. We stopped somewhere along the way for a very sustainable breakfast at Perkins.  Then it was an exceedingly pleasant drive over the emerald waters of the Gulf of Mexico to our destination.

When we arrived at Casa Marina the front desk clerk informed us there is now only valet parking.  I ended having to escort the doorman to the parked car to show him where the key was secreted. In the haste to turn the car over to him I had forgotten about the unusual shelf. I never remove the key; I just use the outer keypad.

We had an early reservation at Spencer’s by the Sea. The view at sunset was magnificent. I had local fare, starting with a spicy conch chowder with crispy croutons, grilled asparagus spears doused in fresh lemon juice, finally spiny lobster with fettuccine Alfredo on the side. Badoit sparkling water and freshly brewed black coffee. We resisted martinis, cigars and Key Lime pie!
